Virtualization is a hot topic for embedded systems. Managed VMs are a niche topic for Embedded Systems, primarily found in smartcards. While assumed to be heavyweight and low performance, they have potentials in terms of portability and scalability especially for large scale IoT deployments spanning embedded devices, edge computing and the cloud. WebAssembly has a lot of traction in desktop and increasingly server environments, but it could also be an interesting candidate for embedded systems. Stefan will present the motivation and discuss the potentials of WebAssembly as Managed VMs for scalable, secure IoT deployments. The current state of the art, gaps in the ecosystem and a roadmap towards an open source infrastructure concludes his talk.
