The Center for Research in Open Source Software (CROSS) at UC Santa Cruz was created in 2015 and since then has raised $2,500,000 in industry funding. At CROSS students learn to productively engage in open source communities, become high-impact researchers leveraging open source strategies and techniques, and continue working on their research prototype after graduation to build developer communities. In this lightning talk, the speakers will highlight the key lessons learned by CROSS, and provide concrete examples of how open source can be leveraged to amplify the impact of university research. The speakers hope to participate in a conversation about how open source industry communities engage with research universities and how that can help increase open source literacy among university students. The talk will provide concrete and practical community engagement strategies to unlock the potential of students in research university programs. By connecting research to open source communities, students learn how to strategically navigate open source ecosystems, find great mentors, achieve their research goals much faster, and produce valuable and high-impact open source contributions in the process.
