With the increasing number and complexity of use cases that require an interaction with the physical world, the flexibility and capabilities in the edge keep growing. Good examples are AIoT scenarios which require distributed machine learning and data processing capabilities. Placing devices in the wild, outside of controlled data center environments, leads to many diverse and recurring challenges. Examples are scalable and heterogeneous connectivity or unifying the access to the edge device. For the IoT domain, a wide set of open-source projects addressed comparable topics in a cloud-centric fashion. The growing software stacks in the edge also increase the adoption of Linux on these devices. This leads to the questions of how to easily set up and update the edge devices over their full life-cycle while they operate in an inter-connected environment. In this presentation, we want to share our findings and learnings on our journey from taking proven approaches and cloud software solutions for managing large-scale IoT scenarios to the edge.
