A barrier to contribution is a reason for contributors to give up trying to make a contribution, which negatively impacts growth of the community. Understanding common barriers enables us to identify effective means to make their communities more engaging, welcoming, and inclusive. The panelists will kick-off the discussion by presenting 88 common barriers across three categories: a) technical, b) process, and c) social barriers. The barriers and related recommendations were developed during a research project that the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) sponsored. The 2020-2021 data is from ~700 survey responses and 20 interviews, was developed by researchers from Bitergia and the Oregon State University, and validated with the ASF community. For most of these barriers, the ASF community shared their input and provided strategies to mitigate the issue. This panel session will be interactive. Panelists will discuss with participants recommendations for eliminating common barriers. Participants are welcome to share their own stories, provide additional insights, and ask for feedback from panelists and other participants.
